Makha Bucha Day at Bangpu — Temple Visits, Crab Release & Seaside Dining

Makha Bucha (วันมาฆบูชา) is one of Thailand's most important Buddhist holidays, falling on the full moon of the third lunar month (typically February or March). It commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 enlightened monks before the Buddha — a miraculous event known as จาตุรงคสันนิบาต. Many Thais observe the day by visiting temples, making merit, releasing animals, and participating in the evening candlelight procession (เวียนเทียน). Bangpu is an ideal destination for this — combining temple visits, coastal crab release, and peaceful reflection by the sea.

Early Morning (7:00–8:30): ตักบาตร (morning alms-giving) at Wat Asokaram. The temple is especially beautiful in morning light. 8:30–9:30: Crab and fish release (ปล่อยปู ปล่อยปลา) at the Bangpu coast. Vendors are well-prepared for the holiday — expect larger selections and slightly higher prices than usual. 9:30–10:30: Return to Wat Asokaram for ทำบุญ — make donations, light incense, receive blessings from the monks. 11:00–13:00: Lunch at Sunspirit. After a spiritual morning, sit on the ocean terrace and let the sea breeze settle your mind. Note: alcohol is not sold on Makha Bucha Day per Thai law, but our full food menu and non-alcoholic drinks are available. 17:00–18:30: Return to Wat Asokaram for the เวียนเทียน (candlelight procession) at sunset. This is the most beautiful part of the day. 19:00–21:00: Dinner at Sunspirit. A quiet, reflective evening meal by the sea.
